The creative arts can relate to many forms of the arts embodied in action and practice among them (but not restricted to) drama, dance and musical performance, visual arts, writing, publishing, graphic arts, cartooning, film, multi media and design.

In Humane

To be humane is to have or show compassion or benevolence.

Being concerned with the alleviation of suffering.

To interact with care, consideration and respect.

Medicine

the word medicine is from the Latin ars medicina, meaning the art of healing.

Broadly speaking the practice of medicine is to be

active in the prevention and treatment of illness.

Cheryl L. McLean, Educator, Academic Publisher/Editor, Keynotes, Seminars, Workshops Creativity and Arts in Interdisciplinary Practice


Cheryl L. McLean
 M.A. originally from London, Ontario,  currently lives and works from her home in Woodstock, Ontario Canada.  Her work internationally over the last twenty years as a publisher/ educator, researcher, editor, presenter and actor has creatively and actively informed professionals and students about the multiple ways the arts and  creativity can be applied in health and  education in training and in interdisciplinary practice fostering greater human empathy and understanding while raising awareness and improving quality care and practitioner effectiveness.  

Cheryl has published internationally and presented across Canada and in the U.S. as a keynote speaker, seminar leader and performer for universities and health organizations among them Penn State University, McGill Medical School, The University of Western Ontario and many others.  

She has edited three research based textbooks published by Brush Education, Edmonton, that have helped define and advance the field.  The first book Creative Arts in Interdisciplinary Practice  showed by way of example how nurse educators, physicians, business leaders and others used creativity in applied ways in interdisciplinary practice for health, hope and change.  The second Creative Arts for Community and Cultural Change was a collection of qualitative research accounts which demonstrated how community based and participative arts methods transformed learning and helped address health and critical community needs.  

The third text Creative Arts in Humane Medicine is a book for medical educators, practitioners and students to show how the arts and creativity can contribute toward a more caring and empathetic approach to medicine.  It has been described by physicians as:

a must read for those responsible for medical education and a book that stands out as a fascinating journey to meet the educators,  clinicians, support workers who apply arts based methods in innovative ways to enhance patient care.
